Frequently Asked Questions
I'm having problems connecting to your FTP site.
DESCRIPTION
I'm having problems connecting to your FTP site, but I can connect to other sites. I get error messages like the following:
"Service not available, remote server has closed connection"
"Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the name correctly and have permission to access the folder."
"The server name or address could not be resolved."
"warning: can't verify hostname"
SOLUTION
First, check your computer set-up to make sure you're using the proper Domain Name Server (DNS) supplied by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or institute.
Then, if you still have problems, check this:
If you are using dialup, cable modem or DSL to connect to the Internet, the
Internet Protocol (IP) address assigned to you might be different every time
you use the service. The IP address should have a DNS entry in their DNS
database. Ask your ISP or company network administrator to see whether the
IP address your computer is using has "full DNS resolution". This means that
the IP address you are using can be resolved in the DNS into a "fully
qualified domain name" and vice versa (from that "fully qualified domain
name", DNS can resolve it into an IP address).
Due to increased computer security, our FTP server will not allow any site to connect to us if there's a discrepancy between the host name/IP address matchup.
If you continue having problems, please email us the following information:
- date you tried to access us
- approximate time
- domain name or IP address of computer you were using
- the error message(s) you received
The following could also be helpful:
- your computer Operating System (OS)
- type of FTP you're using
- type of internet connection (ie, cable modem, DSL, dial-up, etc.)
Once we receive that information, we'll take a look and see if we can determine what the problem is.

What is HDF? Where can I get the HDF library?
DESCRIPTION
What is HDF?
SOLUTION
HDF, Hierarchical Data Format, is a library and platform independent data format for the storage and exchange of scientific data. HDF technologies address the problems of how to organize, store, discover, access, analyze, share, and preserve data in the face of enormous growth in size and complexity. HDF was developed and supported by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and is now supported by The HDF Group. HDF is freely available. The HDF library and further information on HDF is
available from The HDF Group (http://www.hdfgroup.org/).
Many software packages (e.g. MATLAB and IDL have HDF capabilities built-in. In you are using such a software package, then you do not need to download the HDF library. |
